WHO IS GREG LLOYD?

Originally from Sydney, Greg completed a B.Mus. in Jazz Performance in Australia and went to Europe to expand his musical horizons, which led to completion of a 1st Class Honours M. Mus from C.I.T (Cork School of Music) in Music Jazz Performance. Greg is currently researching for his PhD in Music.

Greg has been based in Dublin for the last 20 years, interspersed with a few years based in Paris. During this time, Greg has collaborated with numerous musicians in Ireland and abroad.

Greg had a rare and unique opportunity to spend over a year in Algiers on two separate occasions, in 2006 and 2008, where he worked daily with the Masters of ‘Chaabi’ who had been underground since the time of the revolution of Algeria in the early 1960s. He arranged, orchestrated, composed and rehearsed this music of the Casbah, the ‘Chaabi’ or ‘popular’ music of Algiers, for the CD and documentary film ‘El Gusto’, essentially an Algerian ‘Buena Vista Social Club’. This period of filming culminated in a tour of Europe where Greg performed with the El Gusto Orchestra at the Barbican (UK) and at the Berlin Jazz Festival.

Greg also worked with the producers of Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti and Rachid Taha in France during this time and he rehearsed the El Gusto Orchestra in preparation for the recording of their album the ‘Abel Hadi Halo & the El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers’ where he worked with Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz).

Greg has also studied with Joe Zawinul, Lee Konitz, John Patitucci, Mike Stern, Mark Murphy, Niels-Henning Orsted Peterson and Mike Nock.

Greg also rehearsed the orchestra in preparation for the recording of 'Abel Hadi Halo & the El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers', an album which he co-produced with Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz), released on the ‘Honest Jon’s’ label.

Greg is proud to have played a part in reuniting the musicians of the El Gusto Orchestra and in the rediscovery of 'Chaabi' music, which had been underground since the Algerian war.

In 2015 Greg toured throughout Australia and played over 50 performances.

WHERE IS GREG BASED?

Greg is currently based in Dublin, Ireland and moves between Sydney, Paris and Ireland performing with his music collaborating with fellow artists with his own and their projects and as a soloist.

FUTURE PLANS

Greg is currently in the process of releasing a new second album, “Early Train” and is looking to bring this new music to as many festivals abroad as possible to reach bigger audiences.

Greg is looking for international representation (outside of Ireland) in the form of a booking agent/ manager/record label to assist him in bringing his music to the next level.
