Greg Lloyd

Original Instrumental Improvised music

A genre alchemist, Greg blends jazz tradition, North African chaabi pulse, classical complexity and contemporary textures into immersive instrumental improvised musical journeys.

One of Ireland's most sought after pianists, Greg Lloyd is an Irish/Australian musician fusing contemporary Jazz, Latin, Funk, Classical and North African sonorities with original instrumental compositions and improvisations in a traditional piano trio format with percussion.

Greg’s music is an exploration of improvisation as a living language — a conversation between traditions, emotions, and cultural memory.

Rooted in jazz, each composition begins and end with enthralling harmony and captivating melody as a framework rather than a fixed structure, allowing spontaneity to guide the direction of the music. The music is never the same twice. The blues provides its emotional backbone, jazz offers freedom of dialogue, rock contributes raw energy, funk shapes the groove, classical music informs the harmonic architecture, and North African chaabi brings ancestral rhythm and melodic ornamentation into the soundscape.

The music is not about blending genres for novelty, but about honouring the shared spirit of improvisation that lives within them. It reflects both personal identity and collective influence — a musical journey that moves between continents, traditions, and sonic textures.

At its heart, Greg invites listeners into the moment: to feel the tension, the release, the unpredictability, and the connection that only improvised music can create, delivering a dynamic, mesmerising sonic experience that transcends cultural boundaries. The music satisfies and explores all musical palettes, leaving the listener wanting more.

Greg’s music resonates Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Pat Metheny, Avishai Cohen, Tord Gustavsen, Phillip Glass, Oscar Peterson and popular North African music.

Greg has captivated audiences in Europe, Japan and Australia, exploring solo piano, trio and quartet formats within his live performances.

Greg’s second highly anticipated album, ‘Early Train’, is releasing on the 11th of April 2026 on all platforms, 11 fresh tracks plus two LIVE performances on one night at Camden Recording Studio Dublin, Ireland where the shows will be recorded in front of audience by video and audio to be released later as a full live concert. A Greg Lloyd unplugged.

Three new singles and music videos from the album have already been released in 2025, ‘Softly Spoken’,‘5th Floor Up’ and ‘Petrichor’. ****LINK****

His debut album, ‘Long Way Home’ by the Greg Lloyd Group (Kapai Music, 2012), received rave reviews worldwide and was distributed by Disk Union Japan. Renowned Japanese jazz critic Yasukuni Terashima included a single from the album on his annual compilation of the best music of the year for Jazz Bar 2013.

Originally from Sydney, Greg completed a B.Mus. in Jazz Performance in Australia and went to Europe to expand his musical horizons, which led to completion of a 1st Class Honours M. Mus from C.I.T (Cork School of Music) in Music Jazz Performance. Greg is currently researching for his PhD in Music.

Greg has been based in Dublin for the last 20 years, interspersed with a few years based in Paris. During this time, Greg has collaborated with numerous musicians in Ireland and abroad.

Greg had a rare and unique opportunity to spend over a year in Algiers on two separate occasions, in 2006 and 2008, where he worked daily with the Masters of ‘Chaabi’ who had been underground since the time of the revolution of Algeria in the early 1960s. He arranged, orchestrated, composed and rehearsed this music of the Casbah, the ‘Chaabi’ or ‘popular’ music of Algiers, for the CD and documentary film ‘El Gusto’, essentially an Algerian ‘Buena Vista Social Club’. This period of filming culminated in a tour of Europe where Greg performed with the El Gusto Orchestra at the Barbican (UK) and at the Berlin Jazz Festival. The music was then later performed at Bercy (Paris).

Greg also worked with the producers of Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti and Rachid Taha in France during this time and he rehearsed the El Gusto Orchestra in preparation for the recording of their album on the Renmark label  ‘Abel Hadi Halo & the El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers’ where he worked with Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz).

Greg has also studied with Joe Zawinul, Lee Konitz, John Patitucci, Mike Stern, Mark Murphy, Niels-Henning Orsted Peterson and Mike Nock.
